"Everything happens for a reason"
Here, I share my experiences and reflections from the various project field trips I’ve participated in, highlighting what I’ve learned and how these journeys have shaped my understanding and perspective.
Ghost gear retrieval in Norway
2024
Joining the retrieval cruise in Norway gave me firsthand experience in tracking and recovering lost fishing gear, witnessing the challenges and impact of ghost gear on marine ecosystems.
Spousal influence on decision-making
2020
In collaboration with a PhD student from the University of Gothenburg, I served as the local project manager, overseeing the implementation of survey. My role was to ensure smooth execution on the ground while guiding the team through the project's critical stages.
Climate resilience in shrimp farming
2019
This project marked a significant milestone in my academic journey, as it was my first experience serving as a co-investigator. Collaborating with my colleague, we focused on household shrimp farming, exploring farmers' livelihoods and their adaptation strategies to climate change.
Connecting communities and mangroves
2017
This project, funded by the Environment for Development initiatives, built upon the data I collected in 2015, allowing us to deepen our understanding of the vital role that mangrove ecosystems play in supporting aquaculture and fisheries throughout Vietnam.
Voices of the Mekong: Floods and Farmers
2016
As a research assistant on this study, we conducted interviews with households in Dong Thap and An Giang to explore the flood mitigation behaviors of rice-farming households in the Mekong Delta. Our focus was particularly on their perceptions of climate change and how risk communication influences their decision-making.
Understanding Livelihoods: The Role of Mangroves in South Vietnam
2015
Working as a research assistant, this field trip marked a significant milestone in my academic journey, as it was my first experience in data collection under the guidance of my master’s supervisor. We conducted surveys across the coastal provinces of the Mekong River Delta, focusing on the livelihoods and production practices of shrimp farmers and small-scale fishers, particularly regarding the role of mangrove forests.
