MY VIETNAMESE STUDENTS
Tromsø, 10 October 2024
Reflecting on my experiences working with students as enumerators and data entry assistants for various projects in Vietnam fills me with immense pride and gratitude. Over the years, I have had the privilege of collaborating with a talented group of students—both male and female—who have consistently impressed me with their intelligence, energy, and dedication. Their willingness to learn and curiosity about the world around them has not only made our work more enjoyable but has also enriched the research we have conducted together.
Each project became a unique adventure, filled with challenges that we tackled as a team. As enumerators, my students approached every survey with enthusiasm, engaging with residents in these rural communities and gathering data meticulously. Their hard work and perseverance created a positive atmosphere, making even the longest days in the field seem manageable. They interacted with local households with respect and curiosity, ensuring that we obtained high-quality data while also building trust.
Once we returned to the office, the energy didn’t fade. My students transitioned seamlessly into data entry, meticulously inputting the information we collected. I was always amazed at their attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, knowing that our findings depended on their diligence. They approached this phase of the project with the same enthusiasm they displayed in the field, often sharing tips and tricks for data management that I hadn’t considered. Their collaborative spirit made the process more efficient and enjoyable.
One of my favorite aspects of working with these students was their natural curiosity. They asked insightful questions, eager to understand not just the “how” but the “why” behind our research. This curiosity often led to lively discussions during team meetings, where we brainstormed innovative approaches to our work. Their fresh perspectives contributed significantly to the depth of our projects, allowing us to think outside the box.
But it wasn't all about work. We shared countless fun memories that made our time together truly special. After long days in the field, we would often gather to debrief and reflect on our experiences. Those evenings were filled with laughter as we recounted funny moments, exchanged stories about our interactions with respondents, and even learned a few local jokes. These shared experiences fostered a sense of camaraderie that I will cherish forever.
As a mentor, I am incredibly proud of my students and the progress they have made. Many of them have gone on to study abroad or secured excellent positions in data management and analysis, applying the skills they developed while working with me. Others have chosen to continue as research assistants, further honing their expertise and contributing to meaningful projects. Watching them grow into capable professionals has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my role.
Looking back, I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such talented and motivated individuals in the rural Mekong River Delta. They have taught me just as much as I have taught them, and our shared experiences have enriched my life in countless ways. As they move forward in their careers, I am excited to see how each of them will continue to make an impact in their fields. I hope they carry with them the lessons we learned together, the curiosity that fueled our work, and the memories of the fun times we shared.
In the end, it’s not just the research outcomes that matter; it’s the relationships we build and the memories we create along the way. I am honored to have been part of their journey and look forward to seeing where their curiosity and hard work will take them next.
